"RAFAEL ESPINOZA has actively proven that he cares about our community, its growth, and the people who call it home."
My name is Rafael Espinoza and I want to be your voice in the city council. I have lived in District One’s Jefferson Park neighborhood for over a decade and seen it rapidly expand with, and without, regard for the character that makes our neighborhoods so highly sought after. Though I have worked with both residents and outside-of-district interests to ensure input and collaboration from all sides over this whole period, I remain concerned that residents and voters have no seat at the table when the future of our neighborhoods is decided upon.
I am not alone in this feeling - many residents have expressed this concern to me through various meetings and other face-to-face encounters.
The neighborhood survey my campaign conducted also sent the same message - the responses show 70 percent of you feel that you have NO voice in the city council’s decision-making process. Also, 62 percent of you are concerned that development is out of scale with your neighborhoods. It’s no wonder, given the many examples over the past four years where our current councilperson has either actively or passively let developers run the show without adequate community input. The citizens of District One have spoken – It’s time for a change.
I have the experience, training and devotion to the community to address your concerns, build community and ensure quality of life. I am a practicing architect and well versed in development and zoning. I have a successful track record of working with developers and neighbors to reach compromises that benefit the community, and of pushing back on special interests when it attempts to circumvent existing agreements, plans, or ordinances. Unlike Councilperson Shepherd, I have a sophisticated understanding of zoning and of what makes a project successful, as well as of the options available for developers who wish to mitigate their impact on residents.
I’m running because I care about the people in our community, and because I believe we deserve better leadership and representation on matters that will affect us for coming decades. As your councilman, my goal will be a thriving community in Northwest Denver, with improved quality of life for residents and a favorable climate for our local businesses. I will bring different interests together to ensure that any new growth takes place in a way that respects the character that generations have created in the neighborhoods of Northwest Denver, ensures pedestrian and bicycle safety, and doesn’t harm existing homeowners or overburden our streets and other resources. In short, I will ensure that you and all citizens have a voice when we shape our future.
